参赛短文题目: Mr. Bean

You must have seen this man somewhere---funny-looking, always in a tweed jacket and skinny red tie, seldom talks but acts humorously. Who is he? Yes, he is the well-known Mr. Bean.

Mr. Bean is a British comedy television series of 14 half-hour episodes. The self- titled first episode was broadcast on 1st January 1990, with its final episode, “Good night, Mr. Bean.” on 31st October 1995. During its five-year run, the series has gained large audience figures from UK and the world. People are most amused by the antics of Mr. Bean ---a child in a grown man’s body.

Mr. Bean is resourceful, mischievous, and sometimes malevolent. Apparently, he lacks worldly experience. But he is quite clever in dealing with problems presented to him each time. These problems are all everyday tasks, including not knowing a single answer on an exam, changing into his swimsuit at the beach without removing his pants first, and even getting a turkey stuck on his head.

The classic role of Mr. Bean is played by Rowan Atkinson---the former Oxford university graduate. Atkinson is considered another great comedian after Charlie Chaplin. In all of his videos, he uses mime to successfully portray the image of a typical conservative British man from middle class. People are deeply impressed by his visual humor.

It can be said safely that the physical comedy Mr. Bean represents the typical British humor, which is mainly based on sarcastic wit. The actors act on the impulses which society normally represses. Mr. Bean never regards people around him when he works out his original solutions to the problems. British comedies are different from American sitcoms, such as Friends, which makes people laugh loudly though actors’ actions and dialogues and touches upon topic like sex openly. British humor is comparatively more concerned and subtle. People don’t laugh wildly but just feel and taste the humor and the life wisdom.

If you enjoy British humor, here’s Rowan Atkinson coming again, with his latest Mr. Bean’s Holiday (2007). Enjoy it!
