参赛者姓名: 汪迪 参赛短文题目: Sherlock Holmes Who is the most popular fictional detective figure? The answer should always be one and only: Sherlock Holmes. Sherlock Holmes, the world's first consulting detective, living in a Victorian lodging house at 221B Baker Street, always holding a magnifying glass, smoking pipes, wearing a deerstalker cap and tailcoat just like other contemporary Londoners did, first appeared in one of the Scottish writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's stories in 1887. The career of Sherlock Holmes is quite marvelous. Assisted by Dr.Watson, who is not only Holmes's most important friend but also his biographer, he solved many mysteries that even the smartest policemen in England had never succeeded to figure out. These cases helped him earn his undisputed reputation but some of them took him to the rough side of London. He was always at ease confronting dangers and at that time his mind operated more precisely and sophisticatedly. One of Holmes's talents was his wonderful skill of disguising. To get information or as a way to escape from the criminals, he often altered his shape, age, or gender and disguised himself as people of all fashions. Holmes undertook case after case until 1903. Later he retired to the Sussex Downs ( southern part of England ) and was wrapped up in studying the art of beekeeping. Tremendously successful as they were, stories of Sherlock Holmes, translated worldwide and reprinted numerous times, have set up a standard against which all the following detective novels are measured. Even Sherlock Holmes himself, as a fictional character, was granted Sir Title by the British Royal Family and joined a growing list of England’s national treasures. His residence, 221B Baker Street, made by the Government, now serves as a museum to honor him. Renowned to the world, Sherlock Holmes has been attracting readers in every quarter of the globe and people from all walks of life. Anyone who reads his stories will surely be led into the intriguing course of crime-investigating. |
