参赛短文题目: Weekends in Britain

British people, like people in other countries, now have more free time and holidays than ever before. Having worked for a five-day week from Monday to Friday, they are not at work on weekends and want to do something else to chill out.

Generally speaking, the greater part of people's leisure time is spent indoors. Many read newspapers, watch sports matches, clean their cars or do other odd jobs around their homes such as gardening and DIY.

The Britons are very talented in gardening and DIY. Looking after the house and garden is viewed as the most important home-based activity for men. They often buy materials from DIY Shops and busy themselves with installing electronic gadgets and built-in furniture to their taste. Many Britons are proud of their gardens and want them to look nice.

There is also a wide choice of activities that people pursue outside the home nowadays. In Britain, weekends are always considered precious time for families. Popular leisure activities on Saturdays have been shopping and sports. Sunday shopping is becoming more and more prevailing in recent years and consequently most large shops in towns are open for business at weekends.

Pubs are probably the most popular places for youngsters. People chat, eat, drink, meet their friends and relax there. It is an important part of British life. Beers are served in "pints" in a large glass and "halves" in a smaller one. Britons like the environment there and most importantly, pubs are the best places for young people to socialize.

Teenagers may prefer more energetic activities. Local governments provide convenient sports and entertainment facilities for the locals. Sports fans go out to watch others play the sports like football, cricket and rugby or they take part in them with their friends. These sports have been extremely fashionable in England.
