参赛短文题目: Dog Suicide Bridge

In England, there is a mysterious bridge on which at least 50 dogs have lost their lives in the past half century.

The Overtoun Bridge, which was built by Lord Overtoun in 1895, seems full of mystery with its gorgeous Victorian arch.

In the past 6 months from September 2004 to February 2005, 5 dogs had rushed out to their deaths. More astonishingly, all the accidents happened at the same place on sunny days, just between the last two bridge railings on the right side, and all the 5 dogs were sharp-nosed with long noses.

A dog psychologist doctor Sanders was sent to investigate the secret. When he brought Hendrix, a dog survived from former accident, to walk across the bridge, nothing unusual happened until they came to the last two bridge railings on the right. Although Hendrix didn’t leap over again, doctor Sanders could clearly saw his upset and estimated the poor dog must be attracted by something unnoticed by human beings.

“One of the three main senses of dogs--- sight, hearing and smell, must be greatly stimulated”, said Dr. Sanders. Visual stimulus was first removed from Sanders’ list with his further observation, because there was nothing but the continuous granite from the dog’s angle of view.

Some locals believed it could be some kind of sound from nearby nuclear base or phone signal tower or even the bridge itself which is only audible to dogs.

Eventually, scientists found it was the odor from minks attracted dogs instead of sound. Wherever the minks went, they left behind them a trail of strong fetid odor, and experiments showed it had special attraction to dogs. Nevertheless, the odor will be diluted in damp atmosphere and this is why the uncanny accidents usually happen on sunny days.

However, there are still some other questions puzzling us. For example, why did all the accidents happen between the last two bridge railings on the right? Before a reasonable explanation comes out, we doubt whether dog lovers dare to bring their dogs to walk across the mysterious bridge.
